Graduates of the Georgian Technical University honorably adorn many fields of Georgian art and the world of sports. Many cultural and sports figures have gained world recognition and conquered the highest peaks.

30s - 50s of the XX century

The following were created and actively operating at the Georgian Polytechnic Institute: the Student Miniatures Variety Theater “Smeti”, a drama collective, variety and vocal ensembles, a symphony orchestra, a Georgian folk dance studio, a folklore ensemble, “Shvidkatsa”, and a folk instrument trio;

60s - 70s of the XX century

The Georgian Polytechnic Institute had a Student People’s Theater, a Boys’ People’s Chapel, a pop orchestra, a jazz quartet, drama circles, faculty ensembles, art brigades, vocal groups, art reading circles, circles of young artists, literature and poetry lovers, and young creators.

SPI Orchestra

The prominent Georgian actor, People’s Artist of Georgia, humorist, and artistic director of the Satire Theater, Tengiz Chantladze, who believed that “the foundation of today’s Georgian pop art was laid by the SPI Orchestra,” joined the orchestra of the Georgian Polytechnic Institute.

Nani Bregvadze

The biggest star of the Georgian stage of all time, she has been working in the Georgian Technical University Pop Orchestra since 1956.

“I might have become a singer, but the joy of my first success is still connected to this orchestra.”

Buba Kikabidze

If it weren’t for the Georgian Polytechnic Institute Orchestra, perhaps People’s Artist of Georgia Vakhtang (Buba) Kikabidze would have taken a different path and not joined the pop constellation:

“If it weren’t for the Polytechnic Institute’s pop orchestra, my life would have turned out differently.”

Honored representatives of the art of the Polytechnic Institute

Robert Bardzimashvili

Giuli Chokheli

Irma Sokhadze

The “Blue Trio”, “Vocal Trio”, “Youth Trio”, Bzvaneli Quartet and others brought great popularity to the higher education institution.

Georgian jazz

After World War II, jazz was given a red light in the Soviet Union. Jazz orchestras were created, but none achieved the same level of recognition as the Gepeis Quartet. Its members were Guram Bzvaneli, Tamaz Tsintsadze, Guram Bakuradze, and Shota Kharabadze. Their songs, rather than American jazz, were primarily original works on Georgian themes.

1955

In January, when the orchestra was preparing its program for a trip to Moscow, they invited the famous specialist Konstantin Pevzner from Baku. In 1956, Nani Bregvadze joined their ranks. The student orchestra and quartet, first in Georgia, and then in Moscow, outdid the collectives of all the republics of the Soviet Union.

1950

In the second half of the 1950s, they became so popular that when Georgians visited Moscow, the halls were packed with people, and their concerts were protected by mounted militia.

Why did the Gepei Orchestra or other Gepei groups become so popular?

Talented, creative people have always been greatly supported by the university’s administrators. It remains so today – the university does not betray tradition.
