Essay Competition on Industrial Policy The Center for Public Research, with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, is implementing the project “Industrialization for the Development of Georgia”, within the framework of which it announces an essay competition on the topic “Prospects of Industrialization and Development in Georgia”. The goal of the competition is to identify individuals interested in the issue of industrialization in Georgia and select the best essay/project. The competition accepts papers on both the political analysis of the importance of industrialization and descriptions of specific industrial projects.

  • Essay on the topic – Political analysis of the importance of industrialization

Structure and prerequisites of the paper:

1. Introduction – Industrialization, its essence and importance;

2. Description of the situation – the Georgian economy and the place of industry in it (historical overview and current situation);

3. Foreign experience – steps towards industrialization by developing or powerful states at an early stage of development;

4. Prospects – determination of the degree of need for industrial development in Georgia, expected results and risks;

5. Summary – a brief description of the Industrial Development Plan of Georgia;

Word count: 1400 – 2000 words.

  • Project on the topic – Development and prospects of specific industrial sectors

Essay presentation scheme and criteria:

1. Essence of the idea – a brief description of what the essence of the project proposed by the author is. (Preference will be given to large-scale production;)

2. Output – the products produced by the enterprise, the capacity of the enterprise, the minimum and maximum capacity of the products presented in the project essence;

3. Production process – description of technologies used in the production process;

4. Comparative advantage – the advantage of operating the enterprise in Georgia compared to its global counterparts;

5. Demand and markets – markets for manufactured products, export potential, cost of production, selling price, prices of foreign analogues, competition, etc.

6. Ensuring the operation of the enterprise – this section should describe the issue of providing the enterprise with the necessary minerals, various details, and human resources.

7. Expected results – This section should describe the expected results of operating the enterprise. How many people will be employed, what financial results will result from the sale of products, what significance will this have for the country, what role can the realization of this idea play in social, economic, ecological, security and other aspects.

8. Further prospects – this section should describe the expected prospects that may appear after the realization of this idea; possible technological upgrades, the need to develop other types of production or services;

9. Budget and Schedule – This section should describe the costs required to run the production and operate the enterprise. The entire budget for the realization of the idea should be given in one currency, the same currency in which the cost price and prices of the products were given. The budget should be accompanied by a schedule for its expenditure.

Word count: 1400 – 2000 words.

Three winners will be selected from the submitted works. The winning works will be selected by a group of experts in the field. After the competition, the winning projects will be presented at two Tbilisi universities. The winners of the competition will receive a symbolic fee (460 GEL, taxable) for the presentation of their works.

The deadline for submitting essays/projects is June 25th.
