GTU Maintains Its Leadership in the Country in Terms of the Amount of Grant Funding Obtained Within the Horizon Europe Framework
According to official data from the European Commission, the Georgian Technical University continues to maintain its position as the most successful educational and scientific institution and the unconditional leader in terms of the amount of grant funding obtained in Georgia within the framework of Horizon Europe, the largest framework program of the European Union for research and innovation.
According to the European Commission Dashboard data, the Georgian Technical University continues to be the most successful and high-budget partner in Georgia within the framework of Horizon Europe. The Net EU Contribution attracted by GTU is the sum of dozens of grant projects, which makes it the No. 1 scientific hub in the country.
According to Rector Academician David Gurgenidze, the Georgian Technical University is distinguished by its multidisciplinary engineering and technological research activities, including in energy, civil engineering, and environmental protection. As David Gurgenidze states, the stable leadership of the university and its scientific groups is determined by several factors, which is confirmed by the assessment of European Commission experts.
As the rector notes, within the framework of Horizon Europe, the Georgian Technical University has recently obtained another new grant funding, which will be reflected in the European Commission’s analytics later.
“It is gratifying that the Georgian Technical University remains the most successful higher education and research institution in terms of the amount of grant funding received from our country within the framework of Horizon Europe. This recognition is a testament to the strategic vision and professionalism of our scientists and researchers, which makes the university and its research institutes full-fledged participants in the international ecosystem of research and innovation. I would like to thank the Government of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, and personally Minister Givi Mikanadze – without their active support, our scientific cooperation in the international space would not have been so effective. I would like to thank the scientists and researchers and project managers of our university for generating scientific projects and involving students in them, the administration staff, all the people who contribute to the development of engineering, and the development of science and technology, which has a positive impact on the sustainable development of our country.
As the international experts estimate, the stable leadership of the Georgian Technical University is determined by several factors, including institutional support – the university has an effective grant office, which greatly assists our scientists in overcoming bureaucratic and administrative barriers; technological focus – such priorities of Horizon Europe as digital transformation or green energy are directly aligned with the profile of the Technical University. It is worth noting our long-term scientific collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which makes our researchers internationally competitive. Most recently, a new research project by a group of scientists from the Niko Muskhelishvili Research Institute for Computational Mathematics of the Georgian Technical University has received another large grant funding from Horizon Europe within the framework of the consortium. This funding, of course, will certainly be reflected later on the European Commission Dashboard.
Participation in Horizon Europe requires not only a scientific mind but also the skills of effective competition and fruitful cooperation in the international scientific space. The fact that, according to the European Commission Dashboard, our university continues to lead in terms of grant funding obtained for the implementation of research projects, demonstrates that we are on the right track and continue to position ourselves in the right direction in the international scientific space,” notes Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze.
According to the statement of the Vice-Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Tamar Lominadze, the official data of the European Commission unequivocally confirm that the Georgian Technical University not only maintains its leading positions, but also takes Georgian science to a qualitatively new level.
“The large-scale involvement of the scientific groups of the Georgian Technical University in international projects is proof that the scientific and engineering-technological potential of the university essentially meets international research standards, and Georgian engineers and researchers can play a special role in overcoming modern technological challenges,” says Tamar Lominadze.
For information, Horizon Europe is the largest research and innovation program of the European Union, which goals to integrate scientific research, promote sustainable development, and enhance technological progress in Europe and its partner countries. Georgia’s participation in the program as an associated country has been fully implemented since 2021, which creates broad opportunities for Georgian scientists and educational and research institutions to position themselves on equal terms with EU member states.
