Students of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development of the Georgian Technical University will continue their studies at the Montanuniversität Leoben in Austria, within the framework of the MULgrants program.

Bachelor of the faculty, Mate Beridze, master’s students Giorgi Sabiashvili and David Mekokishvili, and doctoral student Iovane Lomsadze will study in the field of mining, oil and gas engineering, as well as earth sciences, at one of the leading specialized universities in Europe for one academic semester.

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development of the GTU, by continuing their studies at the Montanuniversität Leoben, students will be involved in international advanced research, which will allow them to deepen their knowledge, gain international experience, and strengthen their professional competencies in geology, oil and gas technologies.

As Professor Noe Khozrevanidze notes, the fact that Grigol Tsulukidze, the founder of the Mining and Scientific School in Georgia, is a graduate of Montanuniversität Leoben is particularly important for the youth.

“The great Grigol Tsulukidze graduated from this famous Austrian university in 1913, after which he founded the Mining and Chemical Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute – today’s Georgian Technical University – and became its first dean. It was Grigol Tsulukidze’s work that laid the foundation for mining education and scientific research based on European standards in Georgia. This historical symbolism is a great motivator for the Georgian Technical University.

Today, for our students, studying at Montanuniversität Leoben is not only an academic and research mobility, but also a historical and professional responsibility. doing so, our young people continue a tradition that was founded more than a hundred years ago. In addition, involvement in international research, mastering new technologies and research methods will allow them to become competitive specialists and make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the Georgian mining and geology sector and for the country in the future,” says Noe Khozrevanidze.

According to Professor Giorgi Khetsuriani, Head of the Faculty’s Mining and Geological Technologies Center, the Georgian Technical University is currently developing the scientific and academic legacy of Grigol Tsulukidze and his associates, and to this end, is strengthening international educational and research partnerships. As Giorgi Khetsuriani explains, one of the components of this process is the academic and research mobility of GTU students within the framework of the MULgrants program, which is also widely supported by the partner industries of the Georgian Technical University, including the company RMG.

“Such approaches create a solid foundation for institutional advancement and ensure the integration of Georgian students into the international academic and scientific space. It is gratifying that such collaborations are supported by industries operating in Georgia, which closely partner with the Georgian Technical University – among them is the largest mining and quarrying company in our country, RMG. The company is interested in long-term cooperation with the university and attracting talented, motivated young specialists and researchers, which further strengthens the connection between education, science, and practical production.

It is especially important that the 4 students of our faculty, who will undergo the educational and research process at the Austrian university, will bring the acquired knowledge and experience to Georgia, which will help overcome the challenges in the field, and contribute to the country’s mining, industrial, and scientific development,” notes Giorgi Khetsuriani.
