01

Research title

The involvement of Georgian Technical University in the international SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment.

02

Research location

Experimental, engineering and technological competences in detector systems that meet international standards are still insufficiently developed in Georgia.

03

Scope of the study

Mastering the research, development, prototyping and production of straw-tube detector systems (based on the technology developed by the NA62 collaboration, and one of the main components of the SHiP spectrometer).

04

Research objective

To establish and gradually expand experimental, engineering and technological competences in Georgia that meet international standards.

05

Contribution of GTU researchers to the experiment

The GTU research group brings together more than ten scientists, engineers and young researchers. The group plans to master the technology for manufacturing straw-tube detector tubes, to study their mechanical and electrical characteristics, and to develop an independent engineering and R&D line of work (detector design, mechanical structures, gas systems, integration and testing of high-voltage and signal read-out electronics), as well as to provide practical training for young researchers and engineers (students and doctoral candidates).

06

Application potential

  • Establishing a centre in Georgia for the research and production of detector technologies (specifically straw-tube systems)
  • Localisation of technologies and knowledge transfer for other international research infrastructures
  • Training young specialists in high-energy physics and detector technologies
  • Science communication and educational outreach programmes for school pupils and students
