Welcome Event for International Students at GTU
Georgian Technical University held a welcome event for newly enrolled international students. The event introduced the university, helped students begin university life, and shared information about available support resources. The gathering aimed to help international students integrate into the academic environment and familiarize them with the university’s diverse resources.
Ana Tukhareli and Giorgi Shakiashvili, students at the Georgian Technical University who also serve as staff members in the Department of Global Academic Engagement and Institutional Visibility, moderated the event. A new digital character, “Mr. Global”, also took an active part in the proceedings.
Vice-Rector Professor Tamar Tsereteli welcomed the international students and conveyed a message from the Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze.
“We are delighted that you have chosen Georgia and the Georgian Technical University for this significant stage of your lives. We believe this decision marks the beginning of a journey filled with new knowledge, fascinating discoveries, diverse experiences, and valuable opportunities. We truly appreciate your choice and the trust you have placed in our university. We hope the years you spend here are fruitful, engaging, and unforgettable.
Georgian Technical University has a century-long history, rich academic traditions, and significant scientific achievements. You are now members of this great academic family, and you can help continue its history through your knowledge, hard work, and achievements.
Georgian Technical University ranks among the top 7.9% of universities worldwide; it continues to evolve and holds a distinguished place in the international educational landscape. Further evidence of this is the university’s international recognition: it has been awarded three stars under the QS Stars rating system.
A modern learning environment awaits you here, with renovated classrooms and laboratories, plus opportunities to participate in scientific research and innovative projects. Always remember that you are not alone on this journey — our professors and researchers are ready to support you. We wish you success in achieving your goals! Remember, knowledge is power!”
— states the Rector’s address.
Tamar Tsereteli conveyed the Rector’s encouragement to international students to get actively involved in university life, take part in scientific, cultural, and sporting activities, and use their time here to understand Georgia’s centuries-old history and culture better.
At the event, Vice-Rector Professor Tamar Lominadze addressed international students and pledged comprehensive support for their scientific research. She highlighted the university’s modern laboratory facilities, which support student-led innovation. Professor Lominadze noted that the university is committed to facilitating international students’ involvement in both local and global research projects, helping them realize their full scientific potential on the international stage.
During the meeting, a digital character generated by artificial intelligence — named “Mr. Global” — engaged in a dialogue with the moderators and addressed the international students in English. Teodore Janashia and Giorgi Shakiashvili, students from the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems at the Georgian Technical University, created this character. “Mr. Global” introduced the university’s academic and research environment to first-year students in English, accompanied by relevant visual materials; he highlighted opportunities for participating in international initiatives and conferences, as well as the diversity of student life.
The moderators introduced the students to Dr. Lela Chikovani, Head of the Department of Global Academic Engagement and Institutional Visibility (GTU Global), along with her staff and a team of student tutors. These tutors are available to assist international students whenever needed, helping them adapt to university life. The student tutor team aims to support international students with academic orientation, help them resolve daily organizational or logistical matters, and navigate cultural barriers.
At the end of the event, “Mr. Global” encouraged the students — who arrived from various countries — to make discoveries and take full advantage of every opportunity offered by Georgian Technical University. The highlight of the meeting was the performance of the international student anthem, “Gaudeamus Igitur”, which the digital character dedicated to the assembled audience.
More than 5,000 international students from 35 countries pursue their education at the university across all three levels of study.
