GTU Becomes a Member of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE)

Georgian Technical University has become a member of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE – Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques | International Council on Large Electric Systems), which creates completely new opportunities for the university’s scientific and academic circles and students in the field of energy, engineering, and research.

CIGRE is one of the world’s largest and most influential professional organizations in the field of energy, uniting thousands of professionals and experts from more than 90 countries and 1,250 member organizations – including leading universities, research centers, and powerful players in the energy industry.

According to the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze’s assessment, the Georgian Technical University, which is gradually expanding its international partnership, creates an environment for scientists and researchers, academic staff, and students that ensures their future integration and competitiveness in the international professional space, and on the other hand, promotes the development of the energy sector in Georgia in accordance with modern standards.

“For the Georgian Technical University, membership in CIGRE is an important international recognition and, at the same time, a new stage in terms of expanding educational and research activities. I congratulate the Faculty of Power Engineering, our students, graduates, researchers, and faculty on this significant success. It is their professionalism, the century-old tradition of the Faculty of Power Engineering, and, at the same time, the support of the Government of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, and the direct assistance of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, personally Minister Givi Mikanadze, that have created a solid foundation for the worthy representation of the Georgian Technical University in the international professional space.

It is worth noting that the International Council for Large Electric Grids brings together 61 national committees, serving as a platform where the technical expertise and innovative visions of leading universities, research centers, energy sector industries, and top professionals are actively shaped and advanced. It is of utmost importance for the Georgian Technical University that CIGRE implements one of the most authoritative educational and research programs in the world. The program includes 16 directions and more than 250 working groups staffed by high-class professionals and international experts, whose efforts are aimed at overcoming the challenges facing the energy systems of different countries. The program also includes many local and international events, and the most important issues and topics are discussed every two years at the “Paris Session”, which is one of the most comprehensive international congresses in the field of energy.

I am confident that this new collaboration will significantly contribute to strengthening the scientific and academic potential of the university, as well as the sustainable development of the country’s energy sector.”

As the Dean of the Faculty of Power Engineering, Professor Ketevan Kutateladze notes, by joining CIGRE, the researchers and students of the Georgian Technical University will be even more actively integrated into the international scientific and professional energy space.

“With CIGRE membership, our students, researchers, and teachers will gain access to international research resources and best practices that determine the development of the global energy sector today. Moreover, they will be able to engage in international conferences and forums, collaborate in working groups and professional discussions, participate in joint research projects, and contribute to the advancement of modern technological and engineering fields. Such a partnership, on the one hand, will contribute to the training of a new generation of highly qualified and competitive energy professionals, and on the other hand, to the innovative development of the energy sector in Georgia, the introduction of modern technologies, and bringing the industry closer to international standards.”
