Students of the GTU Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development participate in the “RMG” Summer School

“Participation in the “RMG” Summer School is a particularly important opportunity for students of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development of the Georgian Technical University. Through a one-month practical training program, they gain professional experience directly in a production environment, become familiar with modern mining and processing technologies, and connect the theoretical knowledge acquired at the University with real-world work processes. The special significance of this year’s Summer School is that, for the first time, the project has expanded beyond participation by students from a single university. Alongside students from the Georgian Technical University, students from other Georgian universities and foreign higher education institutions have also been involved. Students of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development of the Georgian Technical University are participating in the “RMG” Summer School. The student support project, implemented for the eighth consecutive year at the initiative of “RMG” and in partnership with the Georgian Technical University and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, provides young people with the opportunity to connect the theoretical knowledge acquired at the University with practical experience gained directly in a production environment.

It is noteworthy that this year, for the first time, the Summer School is being held in an international format. Alongside Georgian students, the program also includes students from Germany, Croatia, and Egypt who are in Georgia as part of the European international master’s program TIMREX (T-Shaped Master Program for Innovative Mineral Resource Exploration).

Professor Tamar Tsereteli, Vice-Rector of Georgian Technical University, emphasizes that participation in the Summer School is especially significant for students, as it strengthens the practical aspect of their education and fosters a direct link with industry. According to Professor Tsereteli, students participating in the Summer School are divided into groups according to their professional interests and specializations. The practical training covers geology, resource geology, geotechnics, surveying, underground mining, ore beneficiation, and chemical technologies.

“For our students, participation in the Summer School means that they have the opportunity to work in a professional environment not only with Georgian students but also with students from different countries. Such an experience broadens their professional perspective, helps them become familiar with different approaches, and develops their teamwork and communication skills in an international professional environment. This process must take place in a real industrial environment, where academic knowledge is integrated with practical experience.

Strengthening cooperation with industry is a strategically important direction for the Georgian Technical University. We need an engineering education system that not only provides students with knowledge but also allows them to test that knowledge in practice and become familiar with the real requirements of modern industry during their studies. In this context, the “RMG” Summer School stands out as a vital educational platform.

In addition, the transition of the project to an international format further enhances its educational value. Our partnership with the international master’s program TIMREX and the involvement of international students contribute to the exchange of knowledge and experience, the development of professional networks among students, and, most importantly, the more active integration of the Georgian Technical University into the international educational space. Starting next year, students from the University of Mining and Technology Leoben, Austria, will also participate in the Summer School, which will further contribute to strengthening Georgian mining and geological education and international cooperation.
