“IV Open International Internet Olympiad in Informatics” – GTU Students Took Second Place.
“The significant success of the students from the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems at the Georgian Technical University in the International Olympiad, with a second-place team finish and an individual second-place finish by David Lomiashvili, once again confirms that our faculty prepares competitive specialists who are ready to tackle global challenges. I would like to emphasize that the faculty, under the patronage of Academician David Gurgenidze, continues to support students so that they can achieve similar successes in the future and represent the country with dignity on the international stage,” said the Dean of the GTU Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems, Professor Taliko Zhvania.
The student team of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems took part in the “IV Open International Internet Olympiad in Informatics”. The Olympiad is an international competition that brings together students from leading universities in more than 50 countries, aiming to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in informatics. Participants compete in algorithmic thinking, programming, data processing, and the effective solution of complex problems.
According to the Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems at the GTU, the student team demonstrated high professionalism and a level of preparation in the competition. They successfully completed both individual and team tasks, resulting in a second-place finish in the team standings. As Professor Taliko Zhvania noted, the result is particularly important as strong and experienced teams from different countries participated in the Olympiad, which made the competition even more intense.
“The success of team member David Lomiashvili, who won second place in the individual competition, deserves special mention. His result once again confirms that our students are distinguished by their high academic preparation. In addition, for the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems, another success of students is another important step on the path to international recognition. The university and, accordingly, the faculty actively promote the involvement of students in international projects and competitions, which ultimately increases both the quality of the educational process and the competitiveness of graduates in the global market. Most importantly, the results achieved by the students clearly demonstrate that the direction of informatics and technologies in Georgia is developing dynamically, and the youth have the opportunity to successfully demonstrate their knowledge and skills at the international level.”

According to David Lomiashvili, a student of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems, participation in the Olympiad was another great challenge and responsibility for him.
“The Olympiad was a very interesting and different experience for me. I have never had a competition of this format before. We had expected that, like standard Olympiads, we would have to work in a limited environment, where we would have to solve tasks only with our own knowledge and logic. This kind of format is already fairly common in similar competitions and exams, so we were initially prepared for a traditional, restricted environment. However, when the Olympiad began, we quickly discovered that the atmosphere was entirely different: there were no technical limitations for participants. We had unrestricted access to the Internet and could even use artificial intelligence to solve problems. This was a real surprise to me, as such openness is rarely seen in academic competitions.
In my view, this decision was intentional. Artificial intelligence is now widely used in both education and professional settings. It has become a routine tool in universities, IT companies, and the workplace. Accordingly, the goal of the Olympiad was probably not only to test classical knowledge, but also to assess how effectively the participant can use modern technologies. I myself am a programmer and have been working in this field for several years. The use of artificial intelligence has long been a part of my work process, and to some extent, this experience helped me in this Olympiad. I think this is what gave me a certain advantage not only in finding answers, but also in quickly understanding problems and choosing the right approach.”
