A Malta University Professor Delivers a Lecture Series to Students
Whitin the framework of Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility program, and under the academic staff mobility agreement signed between the University of Malta and the Georgian Technical University, Professor Lino Bianco of the Faculty of Environmental Design of the University of Malta delivered a public lecture to students of the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of the Georgian Technical University.
Professor Bianco’s lecture series covered a wide range of topics, touching upon both the foundations of ancient architectural thought – particularly the works of the Roman architect and theorist Vitruvius – and the central issues of modern architectural discourse. Among them, the system of architectural values and the principles of universal design are worth noting.
According to the head of the GTU educational studio-workshop – “Poetics of Architecture”, the lecture series of Professor Lino Bianco aimed to deepen the theoretical knowledge of students and introduce them to modern architectural approaches, concepts, and research directions in the international academic space. According to Professor David Bostanashvili, academic meetings of this format play a crucial role in developing students’ critical thinking, understanding the historical and theoretical foundations of architecture, and integrating these foundations with modern design practices.
“The lecture series was distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach. Issues of classical architectural theory, including Vitruvius’ principles, were connected with the concepts of modern architectural values and universal design. Such an approach allowed students to consider architecture as a dynamic and multi-layered cultural phenomenon.
Professor Lino Bianco has played a key role in strengthening the academic partnership between the Georgian Technical University and the University of Malta, as well as advancing international cooperation. Since 2022, he has served as a reviewer for the PhD program in Architecture at the GTU. Previously, in 2015, the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design awarded him the title of Professor Honoris Causa in recognition of his significant contributions to architectural education and practice. This prestigious title has also been conferred upon internationally renowned architects such as Kisho Kurokawa, Justus Dahinden, Daniel Libeskind, and Richard England. Lino Bianco’s candidacy for this title was nominated by Georgia’s leading architect, Academician Vakhtang Davitaia, who later published a scientific article about him.” Professor David Bostanashvili

Professor Lino Bianco’s visit, within the framework of the same mobility, was preceded by a visit of the academic staff of the Georgian Technical University to the University of Malta, in particular, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design David Bostanashvili, conducted a series of lectures for Bachelor’s students at the University of Malta on the topic of “The Poetics of Architecture”. The topics of the lectures included an introduction, the history of the poetics of architecture at the Georgian Technical University, and a discussion of the conceptual and methodological approaches to the poetics of architecture.
For information, the academic course at the Georgian Technical University – “The Poetics of Architecture,” developed using Professor Shota Bostanashvili’s original teaching method, has consistently attracted international interest. Since 2015, the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of the Georgian Technical University has been actively collaborating with the Faculty of Environmental Design of the University of Malta, and Professor Lino Bianco has dedicated several articles in highly rated international scientific journals to the original academic course that was created at the Georgian Technical University.
