Meeting with Writer and Translator Archil Javakhadze
The Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems at the Georgian Technical University hosted a meeting with writer and translator Archil Javakhadze. The event aimed to share experiences and insights regarding contemporary literature, the craft of translation, and the creative process.
During the meeting, students and guests discussed with Archil Javakhadze topical issues in contemporary literature, the nuances of translation, and the creative challenges of rendering a work from one language into another.
“A person’s professional success, knowledge of his work and high qualification are important indicators of his personal development; however, only professional competence is not enough to become a full-fledged and worthy member of society. A person must know and appreciate native literature and respect the history, art, culture, and native language of his country. Understanding national identity and respecting cultural heritage are integral to becoming an educated person.
That is precisely why our faculty places special importance not only on developing students’ professional knowledge and skills but also on deepening their general education, cultural awareness, and respect for national values. To this end, we frequently host writers, poets, and figures from the arts and culture who have made significant contributions to Georgian culture and promoted its treasures. Such meetings offer students the opportunity better to appreciate the significance of Georgian literature and culture, gain insight into the experiences of distinguished creative figures, and develop into individuals who are not merely professionals, but also possess a broad worldview, a strong sense of national identity, and a high level of civic responsibility”.
– Professor Taliko Zhvania
At the event, special attention was paid to the important translation work of Archil Javakhadze, the translation of Shota Rustaveli’s immortal poem, “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”, into Dutch. The famous publishing house “U2pi” printed the edition in The Hague.
The project is significant for showcasing Georgian literary heritage internationally and deepening literary dialogue between cultures.
The meeting continued with a Q&A session and discussion; students showed active interest in the topics addressed and had the opportunity to share their own views and questions with the guest.
