Academician David Gurgenidze Expresses Condolences over the Passing of Renowned Surgeon-Oncologist and Scientist Professor Rema Gvamichava

The Rector of the Georgian Technical University and Chairman of the Standing Conference of Rectors of Georgia, Academician David Gurgenidze, on behalf of the university community, expresses his deep sorrow over the passing of the renowned physician, surgeon-oncologist, scientist, author of numerous scientific publications, professor, member of the Academic Council of the Department of Oncology at Tbilisi State Medical University, and Head of the Georgian National Screening Center, Professor Rema Gvamichava. He extends his sincere condolences to Professor Gvamichava’s family and to the entire medical community.

“The passing of Professor Rema Gvamichava is a profound loss for the Georgian medical community and for our entire country. We have lost an outstanding surgeon-oncologist, distinguished scientist, educator, and public figure whose life and professional career were devoted to saving lives, educating future generations, and advancing Georgian medicine. Professor Gvamichava worked tirelessly to develop a modern oncology school in Georgia and to establish international standards of oncological care.

Professor Gvamichava made an exceptional contribution to the establishment and development of the Georgian National Screening Center and the Center for Radiation Medicine. As the first Director of the National Screening Center, Professor Gvamichava laid the foundation for the development of national screening programs, the strengthening of preventive medicine, and the expansion of public access to screening services. Professor Gvamichava’s name is also closely associated with the development of radiation medicine in Georgia, which has played a decisive role in saving lives and protecting the health of countless citizens.

Professor Rema Gvamichava will be remembered as a physician of exceptional professionalism, wisdom, generosity, and profound humanity. Professor Gvamichava possessed the rare ability to inspire hope in patients facing the most difficult diagnoses, strengthen their faith, and fight tirelessly to save their lives. Professor Gvamichava’s scientific legacy, academic achievements, and the many generations of physicians educated and mentored throughout a distinguished career will remain an enduring continuation of a remarkable life.

On behalf of the Georgian Technical University and personally, I express my deepest sorrow over the passing of Professor Rema Gvamichava. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Professor Gvamichava’s family, relatives, friends, the staff of Tbilisi State Medical University and its Department of Oncology, the Georgian National Screening Center, students, and the entire Georgian medical community.
