GTU Students Pay Tribute to the Memory of Ilia Chavchavadze

“Ilia’s path is defined by education, national self-awareness, the rule of law, responsibility, and service to one’s country. For this reason, it is essential that today’s youth become acquainted with Ilia’s legacy, understand the journey he undertook, and appreciate the values he championed throughout his life. Visiting Tsitsamuri carries profound significance for us. It is the place where Ilia’s life came to a tragic end, yet his ideas didn’t die with him. On the contrary, Ilia’s path has continued, and today, it is primarily an educated, free, and patriotic generation that can carry it forward”, stated Ivane Giorgadze, Dean of the GTU Faculty of Law and Associate Professor, following the service dedicated to the anniversary of Ilia Chavchavadze’s assassination at the St. Ilia the Righteous Church in Tsitsamuri.

Associate Professor Ivane Giorgadze, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Georgian Technical University, Aleksandre Babunashvili, Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Sport; Tornike Shengelia, Head of the Sports Division; Tornike Tutashvili, Head of Student Services at the International Design School; Archil Babunashvili, Head of Student Services at the Faculty of Law and International Relations; and a group of students attended a service at the St. Ilia the Righteous Church dedicated to the 119th anniversary of Ilia Chavchavadze’s assassination. They laid flowers at the site of his murder and paid tribute to the memory of this great Georgian public figure and writer. During the event, university representatives and students once again reflected on Ilia Chavchavadze’s immense contribution to the Georgian national consciousness development, education, culture, and statehood-oriented thinking.

“Ilia’s path resonates differently with each generation, yet its core message remains constant: serving the country through knowledge, hard work, and responsibility. This is the very path that young people must embrace if Ilia’s ideas are to survive as a vibrant, living legacy rather than fading into the annals of history. Today in Tsitsamuri, young people once again had the opportunity to engage with Ilia’s legacy – not just through historical facts, but through the very values ​​that formed the foundation of his life’s work: education, free thought, justice, civic responsibility, and service to one’s country. Ilia’s path continues when his ideas become the basis for our own daily choices and actions.”
