Professor Alexander Taliashvili’s Funding Established for Outstanding Students
“It is gratifying that, from now on, talented and motivated students of the Georgian Technical University who win competitions with interdisciplinary innovative projects developed in groups will receive funding established in honor of the distinguished researcher and legal scholar, one of the founders of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of our university — Professor Alexander (Aliko) Taliashvili. We are pleased that the name of our beloved colleague will be immortalized in this way. On behalf of the university administration and the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, we thank the family of Alexander Taliashvili for supporting talented students and establishing this funding,” stated Vice-Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Tamar Tsereteli, in an interview with the university press service. She made the statement during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding with the Taliashvili family.
The memorandum establishing the named funding was signed by Professor Tamar Tsereteli, Vice-Rector of the Georgian Technical University, and Giorgi Taliashvili, son of the distinguished legal scholar and researcher, Professor Aleksandre Taliashvili, a founder of the Faculty of Law and International Relations.
The signing ceremony, held in the administrative building of the Georgian Technical University, was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law and International Relations, Associate Professor Ivane (Mamuka) Giorgadze, students from various faculties, professors, the university administration representatives, and family members of Professor Aleksandre Taliashvili.
As Vice-Rector Tamar Tsereteli noted, according to the memorandum, the purpose of establishing the named funding is to support students, young scientists, and researchers of the Georgian Technical University in implementing interdisciplinary initiatives that contribute to the strategic, economic, legal, investment, technological, and regional development of Georgia.
Professor Tamar Tsereteli emphasized that the memorandum is not limited to any single discipline or sector. Its primary objective is to support ideas, projects, and research that strengthen the strategic importance of Georgia and the wider region through knowledge, innovation, and analytical thinking.
“We were fortunate to have known an outstanding lawyer and researcher, a member of the Academic Council — Professor Aliko Taliashvili — who was distinguished by his wisdom, generosity, and exceptional personal qualities. He made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of the Faculty of Law and International Relations at the Georgian Technical University. Professor Taliashvili possessed remarkable pedagogical skills and devoted great effort to educating future generations of professionals. For this reason, it is especially meaningful for the university to establish a funding in his name, which will be awarded to the best student group selected through competition.
We are confident that this initiative will further encourage young people to think innovatively, work collaboratively, and apply their knowledge to the country’s development. Receiving funding named after Professor Taliashvili will serve not only as recognition of academic achievement, but also as a responsibility for the youth to serve the nation with professionalism and civic-minded dedication.
It is particularly important for the Georgian Technical University that this funding emphasizes interdisciplinary cooperation among students, because in the modern world, the integration of knowledge from various fields leads to the most significant achievements. The university is confident that, within this initiative framework, numerous innovative student projects will be implemented, making a meaningful contribution to the scientific, technological, legal, and social development of Georgia. Once again, we thank the family of Professor Aleksandre Taliashvili for this worthy initiative.”
– Professor Tamar Tsereteli
According to the son of the late scholar, it is a great honor for the Taliashvili family to establish named funding for students at the university where Professor Aleksandre Taliashvili worked until the end of his life. He explained that the amount of the funding has been set at the GEL equivalent of 2,000 euros, and the award will be granted to the winning interdisciplinary student group or groups selected through the competition. Giorgi Taliashvili also noted that an additional agreement will be signed between the parties to define the competition’s terms and conditions, procedures for awarding the funding, evaluation criteria, and the composition of the selection commission.
By decision of the Academic Council, Professor Aleksandre Taliashvili — lawyer, researcher, professor of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of the Georgian Technical University, and State Counselor of Justice — was awarded the GTU Gold Medal in 2024 during his lifetime for his exceptional contribution to the university. Following his passing, and at the initiative of the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, with the agreement of the Academic Council and in accordance with the wishes of the university community, Professor Taliashvili’s photograph was placed in the Gallery of Distinguished Scientists and Teachers of the Georgian Technical University.
